What an awesome day. At 6:45 we headed out in our Uber to the bus station. At 7 Tony our driver drove up and stood by the bus checking Great Sites tickets for the Hobbiton & Waitomo Experience. Once on the bus it was a 2 1/2 hour narrated ride to Hobbiton.

We arrived at Hobbiton around 9:30. Our guide was very knowledgeable. Once again pictures do it justice.

What I didn’t take was a picture of the buffet lunch. They had something for everyone. We sat at a table with people from France, Canada and Arizona.

Back on the bus we headed to Waitomo Glowworm Caves. Known as one of New Zealand’s best natural attractions. We walked through the cave and the guide sang a Māori song in the cathedral section. Then we took a boat ride in total darkness through the glowworm grotto. It was like looking up at the stars on a clear night. We were only allowed to take pictures at the very end – none inside the cave.

Back on the bus we headed back to Auckland. What a fun day we had!

  1. Just like Bilboa, you had another adventure! The Freeman family are big fans of all things Hobbit and LOTR! Thanks for the great pics!

  2. Peter Jackson was lucky having been born in New Zealand, to recognize that his country was the perfect place to set the fantasyland of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit movies. Life does sometimes allow for the perfect combination of art and nature.

    1. Nancy, how cool is it that you went to Hobbiton! It looks like you were able to go inside one of the Hobbit homes. It reminds me of a Grounds for Sculpture for Hobbits.
The mud spa looks inviting. The glowworm cave must have been enchanting. It sounds magical!
